DARWIN, Australia — Bangladesh have produced one of the greatest victories in their cricket history, stunning Australia by nine wickets in the first Test in Darwin to record their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.
Australia were bowled out for just 198 in their first innings, with fast bowler Hasan Mahmud taking 6 for 55. Bangladesh then seized complete control, piling up 426 and establishing a commanding 228-run first-innings lead.
Australia fought back in their second innings through Cameron Green’s 104, but could manage only 284. Mehidy Hasan Miraz took five wickets as Bangladesh restricted the hosts to a lead of just 56 runs.
Set only 57 runs to win, Bangladesh completed the chase for the loss of one wicket, sealing a remarkable nine-wicket victory and triggering jubilant celebrations. Hasan Mahmud was named Player of the Match after taking nine wickets across the two innings.
The triumph is Bangladesh’s second Test victory over Australia, following their famous 20-run win in Dhaka in 2017, but this is the first time the Tigers have defeated Australia in a Test in Australia.
The victory gives Bangladesh a 1–0 lead in the two-Test series, with the second Test scheduled to begin in Mackay on August 22.
