Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that migration policy will not be considered at Labor’s federal cabinet meeting in Perth, despite intensifying political debate over population growth, housing shortages and pressure on public infrastructure.
Mr Albanese said cabinet would instead focus primarily on finalising proposed national standards for large-scale data centres ahead of Wednesday’s national cabinet meeting.
“We have a series of plans in place. There’s more work to do, and we’ll make announcements at the appropriate time,” the Prime Minister said when questioned about migration.
The decision comes as Opposition Leader Angus Taylor signals that the Coalition may seek to reduce annual net overseas migration to “well below” 200,000. Mr Taylor said migration levels should be linked directly to Australia’s capacity to build new homes.
The Coalition argues that high migration without adequate housing construction has contributed to rising rents, housing scarcity and increased pressure on essential services. However, the opposition is yet to release a fully detailed migration policy.
