Democrats have won control of both the US House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections, according to Associated Press calls and ABC News reporting. The outcome delivers a significant political setback to President Donald Trump and his Republican Party.
The Democratic gains included Republican-held Senate seats in Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Kansas, Iowa and Maine. Voter concerns over living costs, government corruption and the war with Iran contributed to the Republican losses, according to election reporting.
When the new Congress takes office in January, Democrats will have the power to block Republican legislation, investigate the administration and reject presidential nominees. Trump will remain president and retain the authority to veto legislation.
Vote counting continues in some contests, with final seat totals and official certification still pending.
