The Sri Lankan government is investigating the allegations made by then-Sri Lankan sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamag.
Police on Tuesday recorded the statement of Arvind de Silva, the chief selector of Sri Lanka Cricket during the 2011 World Cup. Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara will have to appear before police on Thursday. The Sri Lankan English daily Daily Mirror reported.
In early June, Aluthgamage, the current Minister of State for Power and Energy in the Sri Lankan government, who was Sports Minister in 2011, made the explosive remark that the World Cup final was rigged. There was a special group in Sri Lanka behind it. Otherwise, Sri Lanka would not have lost in the final. He also demanded an investigation.
The Special Investigation Division of the Sri Lankan Sports Ministry has started the investigation as per his demand. Aluthgamag’s statement was recorded on June 24. According to him, he wants a full investigation based on his doubts about the 2011 World Cup. Sri Lankan cricket legend Arvind de Silva, along with 2011 World Cup final opening batsman Upul Tharangao, appeared before police on Tuesday.
In response to Aluthgamag’s explosive remarks, Sri Lanka captains and co-captains at the 2011 World Cup, Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, claimed it was his political ploy in the upcoming elections. They asked him to give proper evidence in favor of the match.
