Australia seeks stronger global voice as Albanese promotes peace, climate security and responsible AI. Australia has officially launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2029–2030 term, using the UN General Assembly gathering in New York to promote its international leadership credentials.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said membership of the Security Council would allow Australia to play a stronger role in shaping global responses to armed conflict, climate change, cyber threats and the rapid development of artificial intelligence.
The Australian Government said its campaign would prioritise conflict prevention, civilian protection, ocean and climate security, and the development of peaceful, resilient and inclusive digital systems.
Albanese expressed confidence that Australia would receive strong support from Pacific island countries and Southeast Asian nations. He said international conflicts increasingly affect Australia’s security, economy and way of life, making active participation in global decision-making essential.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia wanted a world governed by international rules rather than power and force. She described Australia as an active middle power capable of making a practical contribution to international peace and security.
Election scheduled for 2028
The UN Security Council consists of five permanent members—the United States, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdom—and 10 elected non-permanent members.
Australia will compete for one of two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group. Finland is also seeking a position from the same group. The UN General Assembly is expected to elect the 2029–2030 members by secret ballot in June 2028.
Australia is a founding member of the United Nations and previously served on the Security Council in 2013–2014. If elected, the government says it will advocate for small and medium-sized nations, including countries across the Indo-Pacific region.
