Australia has outlined the benefits and conditions of its 10-year Frequent Traveller Stream under the Visitor visa (subclass 600), offering eligible passport holders greater flexibility for regular tourism, family visits and short-term business travel.

The four major benefits are:

1. Long-term validity: The visa may be granted for up to 10 years, depending on the applicant’s circumstances.
2. Multiple entry: Holders may enter Australia repeatedly while the visa remains valid, avoiding the need to submit a new visitor visa application for every trip.
3. Tourism and family visits: Travellers may holiday, take a cruise, and visit relatives or friends in Australia.
4. Business visitor activities: Holders may attend meetings, conferences, contract negotiations and other approved business engagements. However, the visa does not provide general employment rights.

The Department of Home Affairs says each visit is limited to a maximum of three months. Holders must also not spend more than a combined 12 months in Australia during any 24-month period. 

Important restrictions

Despite its 10-year validity, the visa does not allow a person to live continuously in Australia for 10 years.

Visa holders generally:

• cannot work in Australia;
• cannot remain longer than three months after each entry;
• must not exceed 12 months of total stay within any 24-month period;
• cannot extend the Frequent Traveller visa;
• may study or undertake training for no more than three months;
• must remain genuine temporary visitors and comply with all health, character and financial requirements; and
• may be required to undergo a medical assessment.
