The introductory meeting of the newly formed convening committee of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal, New South Wales (NSW), Australia branch, was held at the Lakemba Library Hall in Sydney.
The meeting was organised to formally introduce the members of the newly constituted committee and to outline their organisational responsibilities. The program was presided over by the Convener of the NSW Swechchasebak Dal, Mithu Bepari, while the session was conducted by the Acting Member Secretary, Mohammad Nur Alam.
The meeting was attended as the chief guest by Rashedul Haque, International Affairs Secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). In his address, he stated that the Swechchasebak Dal is one of the vital driving forces of the BNP. He emphasised that the active role of BNP leaders and activists in Australia is playing an important part in the ongoing movement to restore democracy in Bangladesh. He urged the members of the newly formed committee to remain steadfast in the party’s principles and ideology while carrying out their responsibilities.
He further said that a well-orchestrated conspiracy is currently underway to obstruct elections in Bangladesh, while the interim government is reluctant to relinquish power and widespread misinformation is being spread online against the BNP. In this context, he stressed that safeguarding democratic rights remains the ultimate goal of the movement and that expatriate Bangladeshis also have an important role to play. He reaffirmed that the BNP will not retreat from the struggle to restore democracy, describing it not merely as a party movement but as a fight for the rights, freedom, and voting power of millions of Bangladeshis. He expressed confidence that, under the leadership of Begum Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman, the movement would ultimately succeed, Insha’Allah.
As the principal speaker, Mohammad Ferdous Omi, International Affairs Secretary (with Joint Secretary status) of the Central Committee of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal, said he firmly believes that the members of the new committee will serve not only as party workers but also as frontline soldiers in the struggle to restore democracy in Bangladesh. He highlighted that democracy in the country has repeatedly come under attack through autocracy, military rule, and one-party governance. He criticised the interim government for attempting to prolong its tenure under the pretext of reforms, thereby undermining the people’s voting rights, and called upon Swechchasebak Dal activists to actively engage in the movement to restore those rights.
Welcoming the newly formed committee, the President of BNP Australia, AFM Tawhidul Islam, expressed optimism that the organisational activities of the Swechchasebak Dal in New South Wales would gain renewed momentum through this committee. He described uncompromising leader Begum Khaleda Zia as a key architect of democratic Bangladesh and noted that her return to Bangladesh following medical treatment is a source of hope for the nation. He sought prayers from the countrymen for her continued good health and long life.
BNP Australia General Secretary Mohammad Haider Ali stated that political rights and democracy in Bangladesh are currently facing a severe crisis. He criticised ongoing delays and excuses in the name of reforms to avoid holding elections and demanded the prompt announcement of an acceptable national election roadmap. He expressed confidence that whenever elections are held, the BNP will return to power with a historic majority, Insha’Allah.
Australia Swechchasebak Dal Convener Mashiur Rahman Tuhin said that the newly formed committee would further strengthen the organisational structure and inspire renewed enthusiasm among activists. He reiterated the commitment of Swechchasebak Dal activists in Australia to actively support the implementation of the BNP’s declared 31-point state reform agenda under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, describing the framework as a guiding roadmap for restoring democracy and people’s rights.
Member Secretary of Swechchasebak Dal Australia Jahidur Rahman stated that the BNP’s 31-point reform proposal is a positive and exemplary initiative for building a democratic state. He said that the people of Bangladesh are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to determine their future through free and fair elections and expressed hope that the NSW Swechchasebak Dal would play a significant role in the movement to restore voting rights.
Among others who addressed the meeting were BNP Australia Organising Secretary Shafiul Alam Shafik, Australia Jubo Dal Convener Jahangir Alam, Joint Conveners of Australia Swechchasebak Dal Khaza Dawood Hossain, Ahsan Habib, Mostafizur Rahman, Motahar Hossain, Murad Mahmud, and Wares Hossain, Swechchasebak Dal member Md Mobarak Miah, Joint Convener of NSW Swechchasebak Dal Azizun Nahar Mala, Mohammad Nurul Huda, Monir Hossain Bappi, and NSW Swechchasebak Dal members Md. Fardin Hossain, Talha Ibn Tanim Ali, Tarif Bin Jamal Rifat, Mahmudul Hossain, Marina Akter, Sharmin Sultana, and Abdul Hannan Rana. Leaders and activists from BNP Australia and its affiliated and associate organisations were also present.
The programme concluded with a special prayer and supplication seeking forgiveness for the souls of all martyrs—from the Liberation War to the July 2024 student–public uprising—along with prayers for the good health and long life of Begum Khaleda Zia and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
