Four Chinese researchers have been charged with visa fraud in the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice filed charges against them Thursday. It claims they lied about their relationship with the Chinese military.
Three of them have been arrested. Another has taken refuge at the San Francisco Consulate. The FBI wants to arrest him.
According to the US Department of Justice, the four researchers were part of a Chinese penetration effort to acquire scientific and technological knowledge from US institutes.
This is part of the Chinese Communist Partys plan to take advantage of our free society and use the academic institutes to its advantage, said Assistant Attorney General John Demers.
Each of them could face up to 10 years in prison and a 2.5 million fine. However, China has called the allegations against them “naked political persecution.
Extreme tensions exist between China and the United States on various issues, including military and commercial issues.
