Under the initiative of BNP Australia, a special prayer gathering (Doa Mahfil) and discussion meeting was held on Sunday, 4 January, at the Lakemba Library Auditorium in Sydney, seeking eternal peace for the departed soul of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, a symbol of national unity, BNP Chairperson, the late Begum Khaleda Zia.
The prayer was conducted by Maulana Muhammad Ferdous Alam, Coordinator of the Ulama Foundation of Australia and President of the Islamic Culture Propagation Centre. The event was attended by leaders and activists of BNP Australia, Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, Mahila Dal, Zia Cyber Force (ZDCF), various affiliated organisations, and members of the general community. The meeting was chaired by AFM Tawhidul Islam, President of BNP Australia, and moderated by Mohammad Haider Ali, General Secretary of BNP Australia.
The program began with recitation from the Holy Qur’an. Speakers highlighted Begum Khaleda Zia’s political contributions, stating, “From a simple homemaker, she rose to the highest leadership of the country’s most influential political party and helped build the nation on the foundation of Bangladeshi nationalism.” They further said, “Despite enduring countless acts of oppression by authoritarian governments, she loved her country deeply and breathed her last on the soil of her own homeland. This sacrifice has earned her a permanent place in the hearts of millions.”
Remembering her legacy, speakers remarked, “She will remain immortal in the hearts of millions for her uncompromising stance against injustice. Even a child born a hundred years from now will know that Bangladesh had an uncompromising leader who never yielded an inch when it came to the nation’s interests. The presence of millions at her funeral is proof of her immense popularity.”
They added, “Bangladesh today mourns the loss of a guiding force who played an inexhaustible role in the country’s democratic journey. Begum Khaleda Zia was an uncompromising leader who dedicated her entire life to the nation. Throughout her life, she fought against autocracy, fascism, and domination, leading the struggle for freedom, sovereignty, and democracy. Her struggle was not merely political—it was for the people, for the nation. She was a beacon of light whose guidance inspired and strengthened us in the most difficult times.”
Speakers further said, “She was the true guardian of Bangladesh, who protested against oppression, was arrested, deprived of medical treatment, yet never wavered in her patriotism or commitment to the country. Her sacrifices and struggles were profound and deeply personal, and will never be forgotten by the people of Bangladesh. For her, the nation and its people were her family and her very existence. Her life was dedicated to struggle, sacrifice, and service to the people. She has left behind a priceless legacy that will remain eternally remembered in Bangladesh’s democratic journey. With her passing, we have not only lost a leader, but an uncompromising fighter for the nation. Her political and humanitarian contributions will serve as a guiding milestone for future generations.”
