Call to Ensure Tarique Rahman’s Security at ‘Bangladesh Democracy Summit 2025’ in Sydney

The seminar titled “Bangladesh Democracy Summit: Democracy and Human Rights in Bangladesh Election” was held in Sydney, bringing together political leaders, human rights advocates, academics, and members of the Bangladeshi diaspora to discuss the current democratic situation and human rights concerns in Bangladesh.

The programme took place at the Lakemba Library Hall under the supervision of Muhammad Rashedul Haque, International Affairs Secretary of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Australia and President of the Bangladesh Community Council. Speakers at the summit emphasised the urgent need to uphold democratic principles, protect human rights, and ensure a free, fair, and credible election in Bangladesh.

Several speakers called for the immediate announcement of a transparent election schedule and stressed that public participation, rule of law, and independent institutions are essential for restoring democratic governance. They also highlighted concerns over political repression, restrictions on civil liberties, and the overall electoral environment in the country.

Participants expressed serious concern regarding the security of Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, and urged that his safety be guaranteed so that he may return to Bangladesh and engage freely in political activities without fear or intimidation.

Former Australian Senator Lee Rhiannon addressed the gathering and spoke about the importance of international solidarity in supporting democratic movements. She noted that free and fair elections are fundamental to political stability and long-term peace. Senator David Shoebridge of the Australian Greens also spoke at the event, stating that the international community is closely observing developments in Bangladesh and expects the authorities to uphold democratic standards and human rights obligations.

Other speakers stressed that democracy cannot function without the protection of fundamental rights, judicial independence, and constitutional safeguards. They called for international monitoring of the electoral process and urged global institutions to remain vigilant regarding human rights conditions in Bangladesh.

The seminar concluded with a collective call to protect democratic values, ensure accountability, and create an inclusive political environment where all citizens can exercise their rights freely. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to advocating for democracy, human rights, and justice in Bangladesh through peaceful and lawful means.
